In its deepest parts, the gorge can be about 2.200 metres wide.

There have also been recorded more than 110 bird species, 19 species of reptiles and amphibian, and numerous rare butterfly species. Additionaly, the Aoos and Voidomatis rivers host 7 fish species.

The best period to visit the gorge is during summer and early fall when the river level is low making your hike easier. With a steady pace, you can cross the gorge in approximately 7 hours, a journey that may seem lengthy but is richly rewarded by the stunning scenery.
