ANDROS

Museum of Contemporary Art, Andros

The collection bequeathed to his hometown, Andros, by Michael Tombros was the nascent moment of the museum of the “Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation”, which since 1979 (and even more so since 1986, when the new wing was inaugurated) is the leader in the Cycladic art world. The permanent collection, focused on contemporary art and enriched from the personal collection of its founders, brings visitors from Greece and the world to the island. The regular exhibitions prepared with the knowledge and love of its staff every summer, are both Museographical statements and collectible sensory experiences.

Already in 1987, the Museum of Contemporary Art hosted its first internationally acclaimed exhibition in the then New Wing. Over the following years came internationally commended exhibitions of works by artists who had left their mark on the 19th and 20th centuries including Matisse, Kandinsky, Balthus, Giacometti, Klee, Chagall, de Chirico, Rodin, Picasso, Braque, Mirό, Toulouse-Lautrec and others.

The museum has been internationally acclaimed for its integration within the surrounding environs (at the International Garden and Greenery Exposition competition, Osaka, Japan, 1990). The welcoming aura is given from inside and outside with the carefully measured human scale, at each level, from the number of exhibitions presented, the light and the spaces of the facility.

If you happen to be an Art Lover then you must follow the flow as it has become a habit to take a day trip or spend a weekend in the capital of Andros. Following your visit to the exhibition the museum has been offering homemade sweets, over the last few years, in the loft offering a stunning view to the Aegean.

The Roof Garden of the New Wing of the Museum of Contemporary Art, with a surface area of 180 sq.m., with an unhindered view of the Aegean, looks towards the picturesque beach of Nimborio, the Andros Yacht Club and the chapel of Agia Thalassini. It is ideal for hosting social events and cocktail parties which can be nicely combined with a tour of the Museum.

Through the educational programs offered by the museum, its publications and its constant care to enrich the collection suggests a kind of aesthetic education where consistency meets flexibility and the uncomfortable perspective accompanies a steady step. In the screening room, you can come in contact with original works by traveling through time, comparing trends, deepening perspective. If you have time, enjoy the library and reading room and get the opportunity to delve in silence in the bibliography or simply immerse yourself in the magic of Art Books.
