KOZANI
Mount Voio and its wider area is a hiking enthusiast mecca, since it has the largest network of marked trails in Greece of varying difficulty levels, including some leading to high mountain peaks and other, easier ones, that used to connect mountain villages in the past. Joined together, these paths form a continuous route of about 120 km in Voio and a second, smaller one of 65 km on Mount Askio or Siniatsiko. A total of 185 km of hiking trails, passing through dense forests, over bridges, rivers and waterfalls, await discovery by all you trekking enthusiasts.
Mount Vourinos or Bourinos, which is a continuation of Askio to the south, has been included in the Natura 2000 network, due to the great variety of its flora, which includes more than 500 species, some endemic and some very rare. It is suitable for hiking and mountaineering. On the opposite side of Aliakmonas River, on the slopes of Mt. Kamvounia, the Elati fir forest is also an attraction for nature lovers. The Servia gorge has a walking path that makes it traversable even by children. Its impressive rocks, small waterfalls and geological formations are a sight to behold.
For mushroom enthusiasts, whose numbers have been growing rapidly in recent years, the forests of Voio are a real treasure trove. Mushroom picking excursions are organised almost all over Western Macedonia, and beyond. The excursions take place when mushrooms are in season, usually by the end of spring and in the middle of autumn.
Fishing in the man-made Lake Polyphytos is an exciting option as it hosts many freshwater species. The man-made lakes of Perdikka, Ilarion and Sisani are also worth a visit. The Deer Park on Agios Panteleimon, near Agios Dimitrios village, on the slopes of Mt. Vermio, houses 70 domesticated animals, and it will be greatly appreciated by younger visitors.
Other activities include trying out the motocross tracks in Kaloneri, Mikrokastro, Ptolemaida, but mostly in Petrana; the Earth Festival, an eco-friendly festival, organised every July since 2001 in Vlasti; and the Mountain Festival in Polykastano, usually in late July, which includes hiking and overnight stays on Paliokrimini peak (elevation: 1,800 metres).
