ANCIENT THEATRE OF MESSENE / KALAMATA
Norma
On 12 July, the Athens Concert Hall presents Vincenzo Bellini’s Norma in concert form at the Ancient Theatre of Messene — the birthplace of opera legend Maria Callas. Featuring acclaimed mezzo-soprano Karine Deshayes and conducted by George Petrou, offering a unique cultural experience.
Bellini’s Norma (1831) stands as a landmark of Romantic opera and is one of the most challenging vocal works in the bel canto tradition. The role of Norma holds special significance as one of Maria Callas’s most emblematic parts — famously performed by the legendary soprano in the celebrated 1960 production at Epidaurus.
This performance honours the great Greek soprano, whose extraordinary artistry and powerful presence reshaped the operatic world.
The story of Norma, the Gallic priestess who is both heroic and tragic, unfolds through a stirring score filled with pain, prayer, and rebellion.
The renowned aria Casta Diva is a highlight of the opera, expressing both a whisper and a cry in equal measure.
With Greek and English surtitles.
