The exhibition presents thirty-three black and white photographs that depict the cultural diversity and history of Thrace and Soufli, through a contemporary and human-centered lens. For the Cultural Foundation, the Silk Museum was an ideal venue to host the exhibition, at the place where silk defined the identity of the region and provided the raw material for the impressive local costumes. The internationally acclaimed photographer, who has been involved in the visual documentation of Greek tradition for many years, "perceives" the local costumes with sensitivity and insight.
Two audiovisual productions recording his recent travels in the region enhance the exhibition, inviting the audience to a narrative journey of particular aesthetic and anthropological interest.
The “Caryatis” series by Giorgos Tatakis, a pictorial study of local women's costumes from all over Greece, has been awarded twenty-two international photography prizes. His images have been published in media outlets such as the New York Times and National Geographic, and have been exhibited in major cultural venues, including the Benaki Museum in Athens, the Fragonard Museum in Cannes and Somerset House in London.
In the framework of the exhibition, the Cultural Foundation organizes a programme of parallel activities, offering visitors and the local community the opportunity to engage directly with elements of the material and intangible culture of Thrace.
