Guided tours at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens opens its "home" to the general public and invites you to get to know the Propylaia, one of the most emblematic landmarks of the capital city of the Greek state. Founded in 1839 and designed by the Danish architect Hans Christian Hansen, the neoclassical building and its monumental precinct bring up the most acknowledged highlights of Greek national history.During its remarkable history, the building's indoors and precincts, except from educational activities, museums, anatomy halls, and laboratories, have also hosted a vast number of remarkable ritual events (statue and monument creating, anniversary celebrating, demonstrations, political gatherings, etc.), as well as the Greek Parliament and the National Library. The neoclassical building of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens was designed by the Danish architect Hans Christian Hansen and its famous fresco, by the painter Carl Rahl, highlights some of the most memorable events of Greek mythology, philosophy and history. Furthermore, the sculptures of its precincts, complementary to the architectural and painting programme, focus on modern historical figures and dead fighters' monuments. The University neoclassical building, together with the Academy and the National Library, form the famous Athenian Trilogy, an excellent sample of neoclassical architecture intended to elegantly improve the city center with a building complex representing the prestige and power of King Otto's dynasty. Today it is still one of the most iconic places of remembrance of the Greek capital. The tours offer an acquaintance with the Athenian trilogy and a visit to the neoclassical building of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The tour duration is about 60' and will be made by Art historians of the Department of History and Archaeology, Michalis Giohalas and Pavlos Gkougiannos, under the scientific supervision of the Associate Professor of History of Art in the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Athens Dimitris Pavlopoulos. * Guided tours in Greek language: Every Wednesday 11/7, 18/7, 25/7, 1/8, at 5 p.m. * Guided tours in English language: Every Thursday 12/7, 19/7, 26/7, 2/8, at 5 p.m For more information, please  visit the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens site.
