TRAVEL TIPS
Pelion, Agios Giorgios Nileias
I was very lucky to discover this blessed place on earth, Agios Giorgios Nileias. Only a few kilometers away from the city of
Volos and you just realise that heaven exists!
This village from all the villages in Pelion has the ideal position on the map. During the winter season you have beautiful sunlight throughout the day, whereas during the summer period the village is protected from the burning sun. This really is the ideal place to visit during any season. Beauty bursts throughout the year!
The sea view from the village is mesmerising. Watching the sunset from the veranda of the house is an unforgettable experience!
I guess that is one of the main reasons that Pelion became our annual destination and we go back every time we get a chance to escape from the city. For some strange reason that “ captivating feeling” occurred in all the houses we visited. It was as if the houses were especially designed for us. Real comfort. I don’t know exactly how to explain it…. We felt like home, without being at our home! In a few minutes I got so familiar with the space and without realising how fast it all happened, I had made myself a coffee in an instant and was already relaxing on the terrace!
We went for long walks around the village, going through beautiful traditional alleys, exploring Agios Giorgis from top to bottom. Taking in the magic of this beautiful mountain (gigantic plane trees, chestnut, walnut, brambles and ferns), walking among orchards, apple, and cherry trees, observing thousand kinds of flowers: roses, hydrangeas in different shades.
At the end of our walks we usually ended up on the main street at a great tsipouradiko(traditional greek tapas tavern)
As for the beaches, I don’t know where to begin from. If you decide to do the tour around Pagasitikos Gulf, you can go from Afissos, Lefokastro, Chorto, Milina, all the way to Trikeri just to name a few. Now if you are interested on the other side of Pelion and you want to visit the Aegean Sea you can travel through the picturesque villages Pinakates, Vyzitsa, Milies and reach Kalamaki beach (note: at the square you can eat excellent homemade food, fresh fish and enjoy the views) Lampinou beach is another choice with its crystal waters and a little bit further down you can swim at Limnionas, Mylopotamos, Damouchari and Papanero. All amazing beaches with turquoise crystal clear waters.
And after this fantastic day trip, where you’ve explored both the incredible mountain of Pelion and its surrounding seas, you go home…..sit on your couch on the terrace and reach out for your favourite novel.
Who can beat that? God I can’t wait to go back!
You get addicted to it…trust me!
