Here you will see evidence of a rich and varied past, which encompasses the great Greek, Byzantine and Roman civilisations. You might even take the advice of the knowledgeable Directline-Holidays team and visit the following historic sites.

Acropolis : You may be tempted to begin your holidays in Greece with a guided tour around the ancient Acropolis. Originally constructed in the 5th century BC, the Acropolis was designed as a tribute to the Greek God Athena. It would later play an important role as a defence against attacks by the Venetians of Morsoni. After learning all about this magnificent temple you can take the stroll down to the Agora, which was the major Greek hub of commerce and administration.

Epidaurus : This great theatre was built in the 4th century BC as a symbol of the people's devotion to Dionysus, God of grape harvesting and wine. It was superior to the other Western entertainment venues of the time and was regularly attended by key members of Greek Society. They came to watch dramatic plays and listen to the talented musicians. The crowds are still entertained by local performers to this day.

Olympia : Situated against the backdrop of the awe inspiring Greek countryside, Olympia is well known as the place where the Olympic games begun. As you walk around the ruins you can cast your mind back to a time when crowds would cheer on the sportspeople in boxing matches, sprints and long distance events. You can also see the statue of the Greek God Zeus, which was built by the famous sculptor Pheidias.

Delphi : The awe inspiring structures of Delphi were constructed in honour of Apollo, Greek God of the Sun. People from all over the country would once have visited this place for spiritual council and enlightenment. Indeed, the leaders of the time would once have had to consult the oracle prior to making any key decisions. Today the site is extremely popular among tourists. Some even stay long enough to watch the sun set over the theatre of Delphi.

Meteora : If you've ever wondered what it would be like to explore a strange new world it would definitely be worth paying a visit to Meteora. Here you can see unusual rock formations, which dominate the otherwise flat environment. You can also stop off at the local monasteries, which have been used as spiritual centres by monks and nuns through the centuries. You might also come to understand why the rock band Linkin Park used Meteora as the inspiration for their best-selling album of the same name.

Other Historic Attractions : Those of you who have some time left after visiting the historic sites listed above may choose to continue the learning experience with a guided tour of the Vergina Museum.
