TRAVEL TIPS
Things to Do If You're Looking for Adventure in Greece
Most know Greece for its hot summers, sandy
beaches, historical landmarks and vibrant nightlife, so it might be surprising to hear that it’s also an adventure-lovers paradise! Whether you’re a keen cyclist, avid hiker or just an all round adrenaline junkie, this beautiful country is sure to have something to offer.
Hike The Mountains of Crete
If you’re looking to don your hiking boots and explore the mountains, then Crete should definitely be your first stop. You can follow the ancient Minoan routes through the slopes yourself, or sign up for a guided tour if you want an added educational element.
Alongside this, the volcanic island of
Santorini also offers some incredible treks around the volcano itself: scramble between real lava formations and learn about the eruption that wiped out the earliest Aegean civilizations.
Have Your Own Off-Road Adventure On A Jeep Safari
If you want the thrill of exploring these exciting and varied terrains, without the effort of having to do so on foot, then a Jeep Safari might just be the choice for you. Offered on many of the islands, the most recommended is the Mykonos tour. Unlike the others, it allows you to drive the vehicle yourself, giving you complete control.
The tour drops you off at some of the most exciting spots around the island. Explore the geographical wonder that is the smooth-stoned Houlakia Beach, the tranquil Agios Sostis Bay, and the ruins of the Venetian castle of Gizi, before heading out into the wilderness for lunch at a secluded tavern.
Submerge Yourself In The Aegean Sea
Comprised of over 200 inhabited islands, it’s no wonder that the
Greek Isles are a hotspot for snorkeling and diving. The island of
Milos is one of the best places in the area to truly witness the amazing array of underwater life that exists there.
With many opportunities for deep sea diving, find yourself face-to-face with some of the most beautiful and colorful deep sea fish, and keep your eyes out for the majestic dolphins and adorable monk seals that frequent the region. There are also many fantastic snorkeling spots, both on this island and on nearby neighbor,
Paros, as well.
Stress-Free Cycling
All cycling lovers can find an idyllic paradise on the Greek islands. Away from cars, big cities and motorways, the winding country roads and rural bike paths make for an incredibly calming cycling experience. There are plenty of bike hire shops, particularly on
Kos, so you don’t have to worry about transporting your equipment.
There’s also a worldwide cycling event, named MTB
Thassos, which takes place on its namesake island, and is extremely popular with bike fans internationally. With outstandingly high quality trails, even if you don’t arrive at the time of the race, you can enjoy this fantastic cycling route year-round.
These are just a few of the great ways to find adventure whilst in Greece, but there are many more. If you have any more suggestions be sure to leave a comment below and share you experiences!
