Carnival of Skyros

The Carnival of Skyros will take place this year on the island of Skyros until Sunday, March 2, 2025.



The basic custom of the Skyros Carnival is the custom of the Old Man and Korela, which has Dionysian origins. The custom begins at the beginning of Pre-Lenten Season and is repeated every weekend until the last three days of Carnival.
People dressed in pagan costumes walk through the streets of the city, carrying and wearing many bells. Those dressed as "Geri" wear a black woollen cape and a goatskin mask. "Koreles" are actually men dressed in women's traditional costumes and masks. The "Francs" are men who wear “European” trousers and carry a loud bell.

The highlight of the Skyrian carnival is the custom of the "Trata". During the revival of this custom, the islanders dress up as sailors and bring a fishing boat to the central square of the Hora, reciting satirical verses.
