MUNICIPAL ART GALLERY OF LARISSA G.I. KATSIGRAS MUSEUM / LARISA

PHILOLAOS 1923-2023

The Municipal Art Gallery of Larissa G.I. Katsigras Museum presents the exhibition entitled "PHILOLAOS 1923-2023" in the "Irene Katsigra" hall until January 31, 2025.

The exhibition-tribute to Larissa’s renowned sculptor Philolaos Tloupas, who is known worldwide as Philolaos, includes representative works from all periods of his artistic production: monumental works of public sculpture, from washed concrete and steel, sculptural compositions with industrial materials and smaller scale works from clay, wood, iron or stainless steel, animal-like creatures of myth (Gogottes), works depicting seascapes, models, everyday objects bottles, mugs, chairs and drawings.

Philolaos was the brother of the great and also renowned photographer, Takis Tloupas. He studied sculpture and painting at the School of Fine Arts in Athens and in 1950 he left to study in France, where he lived most of his life. In the 60s, in collaboration with architects, he build projects for public areas. With his works of stainless steel and lava concrete (washed concrete reinforced by steel straps) he cooperates in the humanization and aesthetic upgrading of the place, the quality and the life of the citizens. They are placed in parks, squares, libraries and schools. The famous fountains of Orléans are admirable works of public art. The water towers of Valance, an aqueduct and at the same time a work of art made of stainless steel and cement, carved new paths in the history of sculpture. That is why it was included in the UNESCO list of cultural heritage projects.
He held many individual exhibitions in France, Greece and other countries while also participating in important group and international exhibitions. The French government, in 2005, honored Philolaos for his work by declaring him an Officer of the Order of Letters and Arts, and the French Academy of Architecture honored him with the Medal of Plastic Arts.

In Greece, his sculptures are: the National Resistance Monument in Alcazar Park in Larissa, on the beach of Anavros in Volos, in Thessaloniki, in front of the entrance of the MOMus-Museum of Contemporary Art and in Karaiskakis Square in Alimos, Athens. Very few compared to France, which is scattered with works by Philolaos.

Curator: Andreas Giannoutsos, visual artist, ex Director of the Visual Arts Center of Contemporary Art of Larissa.
