Mikis Theodorakis – Zorba

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of legendary Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis (1925–2021), the acclaimed Ballet of the Sofia Opera will present the iconic production Zorba at the Cultural and Conference Centre of Heraklion, Crete, on Saturday 31 May and Sunday 1 June 2025.

Based on Theodorakis’s unforgettable score for the Oscar-winning film Zorba the Greek, directed by Michael Cacoyannis, this ballet adaptation was re-orchestrated by the composer himself in collaboration with renowned choreographer Lorca Massine. Since its world premiere at the Arena di Verona in 1988—under the baton of Theodorakis—it has captivated audiences worldwide with its powerful fusion of music, dance, and literature.

In this milestone performance, the timeless characters of Nikos Kazantzakis take centre stage, brought to life through evocative choreography and stirring music in a production that has become a cornerstone of contemporary Greek culture.
