ODEON OF HERODES ATTICUS / ATHENS

Koyaniskaatsi Live

Koyaniskaatsi: On Saturday 30 September, 2023, a multi-play with a timeless and universal message is presented at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary since its initial presentation, the iconic work Koyaanisqatsi: Life out of Balance will be performed in its entirety. This prophetic film, produced by Francis Ford Coppola, features music by minimalist composer Philip Glass and is directed by Godfrey Reggio. The Philip Glass Ensemble, Philip Glass' artistic vehicle, will perform the film's soundtrack while the captivating film is simultaneously screened. Joining them will be the Academia Athens Youth Choir under the direction of Michael Riesman.

This innovative fusion of music and film presents a narrative without dialogue, narration, or actors, with lyrics in the native Hopi language. Each part of the film is characterized by a combination of images and music, creating a captivating style, drama, and color. For this performance, the Herodion will serve as an installation space where sound and image coexist.

At a time when climate "change" has escalated into a climate "crisis," when natural resources are depleting rapidly, and the call for intergenerational solidarity and mobilization grows louder, we are invited to participate in the Koyaanisqatsi experience. We will hear the voice that became a warning and witness the prophecy that has become reality.
