From Spain to Chios. The pottery of Nea Moni’s cistern

The Chios Ephorate of Antiquities presents a new travelling exhibition: "From Spain to Chios. The pottery of Nea Moni’s cistern" at the Giustiniani Palace in the Castle of Chios.

The exhibition reveals a secret hidden for many years in the ceiling of the underground cistern (kinsterna) of the Nea Moni or New Monastery, which came to light during restoration work carried out a few years ago. The exhibits recount their story of travelling from Spain to the Nea Moni and how they were put to use once more in the roof of the cistern, giving visitors an opportunity to learn both about the economic links between Chios and the Iberian peninsula during the Genoese dominion over the island and about a building practice that was known since Roman times.
