The Prefecture of Evros has remarkable places of pilgrimage, the most important one being the church of Panaghia Kosmosoteira monastery located at Feres (28 km away from Alexandroupoli). It is a basilica with a dome, established in 1151 or 1152 by Sebastokrator Isaacius Komninos. In Kornofolia (5 km away from Soufli) you will find the female convent of Panaghia Portaitissa, which is the glebe of Ivira Monastery of the Mount Athos. In Soufli visitors will have the possibility to admire Aghios Georgios Cathedral, the foundations of which were laid in 1818 and the one of Aghios Athanasios (they both have exceptional chancels). Your visit in Didymoteicho will be a unique experience, as you can visit exceptional religious monuments such as Aghia Aikaterini church and the great mosque built by Mohamed I. The outstanding Post-Byzantine churches of Aghios Athanasios Metaxadon, Aghios Panteleimon Paliouriou and Aghios Athanasios Alepochoriou are also worth a visit.
At the ruins of Traianoupoli there is a church dedicated to the martyrdom of Aghia Glykeria (161 A.D.). At the chapel located in Aghioi Theodoroi cave you will have the possibility to admire the Byzantine mural paintings, while in Makri you can visit Aghia Anastasia church as well as the female convent.
The churches of the Armenian communities of the region, the imposing mosques of Thracian Muslims (mainly present in Komotini and Ianthi) as well as the Alevis’ tekke (as in Rousso in Evros) are not only worship places, but also very important as far as history and architecture are concerned.
