Nestos river delta is located in the south side of Kavala and Xanthi boarders. Its beginning is located at the fall of the river from Toxotes mountains and spreads towards the south covering a vast area from Nea Karnavali up to Avdira villages (coastline length approximately 50km).
It extends over 500.000 acres. It is considered to be one of the most important water biotopes in Greece and Europe due to its dimension and diversity of biotopes which include lagoons, straw communities, sand dunes, Halophytic communities, small lakes with fresh water, bushes and tamarisks growing mainly on the river banks close to its estuaries, cultivated poplar trees etc.
It is like a mosaic made of different types of wetlands. The largest and more distinct wetlands are in Vassova, Eratinou, Agiasmatos, Kokalas, Chaideft, Keramoti, Monastiraki and Maggana lagoons. Nestos river delta is also a very important biotope and has been proclaimed as Wetland of International Importance by the Greek State and is protected by Ramsar Convention.
