Gallikos river starts from Kroussia mountains (Disoro mountain) and flowing south falsl into Thermaikos gulf close to Kalochori village. It is one of the largest rivers in Central Macedonia. It took its ancient name “Chidoros” or “Echedoros” meaning “having a gift” due to the presence of gold crumbs which are found among other substances brought by the river. Herodotus mentions that King Alexander the 1st developed his economic power due to mines on Disoro mountain (Kroussia). After analyzing samples of gold from items found in excavations it was proved that the ancient people were systematically exploiting the gold of Gallikos river.
