Syros hosts several protected land and water species. Some of the most characteristic are: 1) Mauremys caspica (River Turtle), the rare species of Caretta caretta turtle, Alcedo atthis (Kingfisher), Golden Eagle, Short-eared Owl, the bird Calonectris diomedea, Kirkoi, Lanner Falcon, Storm Petrel, Bonelli's eagle, Booted eagle, Lesser Grey Shrike, White Pelican and White-tailed sea eagle.
