History of Imathia

The history of Imathia is lost in the depth of past centuries and is connected with all aspects of Greek History.
Human facilities appear from prehistoric times. In Nea Nikomidia settlement is one of the oldest Neolithic settlements in Europe (6.000 B.C.).

On the foot of Pieria mountain chain, in the place of current VERGINA, AEGES - the capital of MACEDONIA and the Royal Necropolis were built. The Royal Tombs of Vergina, FILIPPOS tomb and their unique findings are without a doubt monuments of international value.

Several very important Macedonian tombs were also found in Lefkadion area, in the Municipality of Anthemion where 3 of the most important tomb monuments Kriseos Tomb, Lisonos and Kallikleous Tomb and Anthemion Tomb are still preserved. In the same area visitors can see ancient MIEZA and ARISTOTLE ACADEMY, where Alexander the Great was taught by the philosopher.

During Roman times the area flourished and Veria became base of “the Priory of Macedonians” and a religious center. In 54A.D. Apostle Pavlos preached in Veria the new Christian faith, where you can still see the “Podium” (the place he talked from).

During the Byzantine period the area flourished. From that period various Churches (48 in total) are preserved with amazing frescos-hagiographies, most of which are kept in the city’s Byzantine museum. Many examples of Macedonian folk architecture are also still preserved in Kiriotissa and Barbouta traditional districts of the city. At the same time flourishes and Naousa becoming center of handicraft and at a later stage of industry, important examples of these eras are still preserved.
