Visit Greece in winter by CNN Travel

CNN Travel urges its readers to visit Greece in winter with its article titled ‘Not just for summer: 6 reasons to head to Greece in winter’. Even though Greece is linked with summer holidays, winter opens up a whole new perspective of the country. CNN’s author points out how December’s ‘falling temperatures sprinkle new magic on stone-built villages lost in deep forests and medieval castles’, and also suggests a visit to vibrant cities and buzzing ski resorts. CNN specifically distinguishes six destinations as classy winter getaways in Greece that will charm any visitor.

Zagorochoria is the destination chosen for a romantic escape. It is considered a ‘hidden mountainous treasure’ where nature’s beauty is demonstrated by locals. Narrow picturesque streets and traditional arched stone bridges connect little charming villages filled with guesthouses and cafes.

According to CNN’s article an excellent City break and all-year round destination is Thessaloniki. It mentions that the city centre is home to engaging museums, important archaeological sites and byzantine monuments, as well as fashionable boutiques and fancy bars.

The mythical mountain of Centaurs, Mt. Pelion is ideal for those who want to combine hiking, skiing and sightseeing. The author says that the ski resort, the hiking trails, the numerous villages and the panoramic view to the Aegean and Pagasetic Gulf make Mt. Pelion a perfect winter destination.

CNN Travel suggests Evrytania for those who prefer a snowy scenery; an ideal destination with traditional villages, breathtaking gorges, heavily forested mountains, monasteries laden with history and a large variety of outdoor activities to choose from at the nearby Velouchi Ski Resort of Mt. Tymfristos. The article mentions Karpenisi town and some other smaller little villages around the area that are filled with traditional guesthouses and boutique hotels.

The author of the article also drops references to Mani as a wonderful seaside destination for a winter break. It is located in the Peloponnese region, on the middle of the three peninsulas of southern mainland, where the Ionian and Aegean Seas meet. More than 96 traditional villages in Mani make this a unique winter road trip destination according to CNN where the visitor will see tower houses, byzantine churches, sheltered coves, breathtaking gorges and views to the beautiful rugged coastline.

Last but not least CNN Travel has thought of the historic destination lovers. They suggest the breathtaking medieval tower town of Monemvasia in the Peloponnese. It is a castle-town nestled at the edge of a big rock that connects to the mainland by a bridge and looks like if it’s floating on the Myrtoo Sea.The article emphasizes on the important role this town had during the medieval period which is still evident from the walls that dive into the deep blue sea. Finally the author also points out the amazing aristocratic mansions, churches, hammams, fountains and winding paths that each visitor will see.
