Greek airports take off

Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos is ranked at third place of Ryanair’s growth (a low cost European airline), based on its 2015 summer flights schedule. Specifically 75 new flights will be added to the Airports’ schedule, starting August 2015, doubling the number of visitors to Athens in contrast to the same period last year (1.1 million in 2014 while 2.2 million in 2015). London’s airport (STN) holds first place of the company’s growth list with an increase of 127 flights while Madrid’s airport (MAD) is found in second place with 99 flights. 

Ryanair’s new schedule for Athens this summer will offer six new flights to Budapest, Bratislava, Brussels, Rome, Warsaw as well as two per day towards Santorini reaching a total of 161 return flights per week.

Two regional Greek airports have found themselves in the top ten list of European’s biggest passenger growth for 2014, according to a survey based on data by the specialised site, who took into account more than 300 european airports in 43 countries. Specifically Kalamata’s Airport reached third place as it saw a 73% increase of passenger traffic, while Mykonos’ airport ranked tenth place with a rise of 33.3%. During 2014 Greece ranked 6th place overall European airports, in terms of passenger traffic which increased 16,9% compare to 2013.

The spectacular increase of the country’s airport traffic went on till January 2015. Airports handled 1. 617,944 passengers (of which 855,459 were domestic and 762,485 were foreign) presenting a boost of 31.4% comparing to the previous year. The largest variations concerning international flights were recorded at Athens and Thessaloniki Airports marking an increase of 19.4%, while domestic flights have noted important variations in both airports mentioned above, as well as Chania’s airport, on Crete.
