European Best Destinations: Fifteen Greek Beaches Among the Best in Europe for 2018

Fifteen popular and internationally celebrated Greek beaches, as well as other less known ones, are included in the list of Best Beaches of Europe for 2018 recently published on the European Best Destinations website. EBD is a European Organisation created in 2009 and based in Brussels. It aims at promoting the European culture and tourism, in collaboration with the national tourism organizations of European countries and the EDEN (European Destinations of Excellence) network, run by the European Commission. This EBD list is published each year following an electronic voting that includes a variety of categories (best city break destinations, most romantic destinations, best ski resorts, best beaches etc.). So far, more than 5.4 m. unique users have visited the site and it has over 90,000 followers in the social media.

Here are the Greek beaches chosen by the website’s visitors by order of presentation followed with a small quoted description:
-Marathonisi (Zakynthos Island): “Ιt is a small paradise on earth, a unique, exclusive place, sheltered from the crowds. It will take you about ten minutes to get to Marathonisi beach from the port of Laganas or Agios Sostis.”

-Elafonisi (Crete): “The warm waters of this lagoon are surrounded by pink sand that adds to the reputation of this unique destination in the world. The colour pink is due to a red microorganism that develops on the coral.”
-Agios Sostis / Cameo Islet (Zakynthos or Zante): “Welcome to one of the most beautiful and small islands in Greece! Cameo Island is a private island that can be reached via a long and beautiful wooden bridge connected to the port of Agios Sostis on the sublime island of Zakynthos.”

-Sarakiniko (Milos Island): The beach “[…] is famous for its volcanic rocks which offer sunbathers a lunar scenery”.
-Xi Beach (Kefalonia): “Xi Beach is one of the many wonders of Kefalonia Island […] discover its red-orange sand...”

- Canal d'amour / Love Canal (Sidari, Corfu) The writer has found the beach’s particular shape very impressive: He describes it as “a beautiful secret beach, a natural curiosity called "Canal d'amour / Love Canal" due to its hollow form housing a beautiful small beach.”
-Porto Timoni (Corfu): “Porto Timoni, located near Agios Georgios, is obviously one of the most beautiful spots on the island of Corfu; it is a real paradise on earth.”
- Seychelles (Ikaria): “Your effort will be rewarded! The access to the beach is not very easy, the beach is fairly small but it is so beautiful! Have a swim in the clear waters of the most beautiful beach on the island.”
- Simos Beach (Elafonisos): “Enjoy one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe.”
-Kavalikefta (Lefkada): “The wonderful landscapes give way to equally wonderful seascapes, with azure waters bathing white sands in coves adorned with picturesque fishing villages.”

-Apella (Karpathos): “Basically, it is considered a mountainous island full of water springs, pine-tree forests, vineyards, olives and fruit-bearing trees. The rock caves […] are the home of the Mediterranean seal called Μonachus monachus.”
-Kokkari (Samos): “Kokkari is a fishing harbour of Samos Island, which has now developed into a tourist center. Still, it preserves its old traditional face, with small houses and lanes full of flowers. Kokkari is on a small peninsula […] with […] a superb pebble beach […], surrounded by green mountains...”
-Navagio (Zakynthos): “The area is defined by its sheer limestone cliffs, white sand beaches, and clear blue water, which attract thousands of tourists yearly.”
-Porto Katsiki (Lefkada): It took this name as “...formerly only goats could reach this area. The beach is at the bottom of a concave cliff.”
-Egremnoi (Lefkada): This beach is highly praised as one of the top destinations on Lefkada Island as well as the entire Europe, despite the fact that it is a secluded one and became accessible to visitors in as late as the nineties when a new road was built there.
