Athens: among the hottest destinations in the world for 2017

Tourism prospects appear particularly promising for Athens 2017, as it is already included in the most popular destinations worldwide, in a number of publications by leading newspapers, magazines and websites. Common findings in all articles is that in the current year, with the launch of the Cultural Centre Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNFCC) and the National Museum of Contemporary Art (CANM), which add to the leading museums and innovative art galleries in the city, the Greek capital will become, among other things, a very dynamic international cultural centre.

In particular, the editors of the largest travel magazine in the world Conde Nast Traveller chose the 17 top travel destinations for 2017 with Athens occupying the fifth position. As the editor of the magazine Katherine LaGrave notes "Athens has always been known as an old city. What is new is its status as the capital of modern art. Recently opened the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre, an investment of 623 million dollars, which houses the National Opera and the National Library of Greece, located in the largest park of Athens and is the first public building in Greece to acquire Platinum LEED certification. The National Museum of Contemporary Art will also partially be reopened in a renovated brewery after 12 years of absence and in April the city will host the contemporary art exhibition documenta, which takes place every five years in Kassel, Germany. It will be the first to be held in two cities. [...] Although for many years was behind other European capitals such as Rome, and was regarded as the point of transition to the islands like Corfu, Athens has returned as a tourist destination."

In parallel, the Greek capital is among the 52 "hottest" destinations in the world for travel in 2017, according to the established annual tribute tour of top US newspaper The New York Times. With the title "Art Explosion after the crisis in an ancient capital" , the author Charly Wilder highlights, inter alia, that "prices have fallen, but the debt crisis in Greece has not limited the thriving art scene of Athens. In recent years there has been lots of galleries, collective and non-profit art organizations that were adapted to the times of "lean", "while making a special reference to SNFCC and CANM.

Finally, the US site Travelers Today highlighted Athens to top tourist destinations worldwide for the summer of 2017,in a special list published, which combine criteria such as cost of living and accommodation, attractions and cultural quality. Furthermore the editor of the site reported that "Athens is one of the oldest cities in the world with a recorded amazing history of 3,500 years” and then goes on saying "Certainly Greece tops the list of destinations for summer 2017.” The Greek capital is subject to ongoing urban regeneration, making it more and more beautiful to stay in. It offers amazing landscapes, modern art galleries exhibiting historical artifacts and, of course, offers you the opportunity to see its unique both older and modern history."
