
The Prefecture of Rodopi produces the renowned wine of Maroneia, tsipouro, ouzo, hard cherries from the "cherry villages” (kerasochoria) located at the foothill of Rodopi mountain range as well as fresh roasted chickpeas with various flavors (salty, peppery, sweet or caramelized). In Rodopi you will also find the renowned sujuk-lukum (like moustolabades with walnuts on a cordon), as well as all the varieties of lukum, siropiasta (syrup sweets), malebi, samali, halva, tahini, petimezi (sweet grape syrup), pies, striftopita (twisted pie), bougatses (Cream-Filled Filo Pastry) and coffee, freshly roasted in a unique way and full of aromas. It should come as no surprise that Komotini was declared “Gastronomical Center of the Balkans" by the Ministers of Tourism of the Balkan countries.
