Meat
The meat produced in Ios is famous for its quality and taste and is also totally
safe and healthy as it comes from animals of free range. Buy local goat and lamb meat of beef from the island butcheries.

Cheese
Ios has a very developed stock breeding (mainly goats and lambs, as well as cows) and that is the reason why the island has also great production of dairy products. Ios cheeses are famous and are exported in great quantities not only to the surrounding islands but also to Athens. Do not miss to try some of them. People in Ios produce kind of hard salted spicy cheese called kefalotiri, “xino” a very soft white cheese, sweet mizithra and “skotiri” a mixture of cheeses, mizithra and flavorings (it tastes like kopanisti of Mikonos). Buy them from the producers themselves, from butcheries or from super markets.

Sweets
Ios has a great variety of traditional pastries and sweets. Some of those are: the traditional pasteli (made of thyme honey and sesame), avgokalamara or xerotigana (also know as diples), kalasounia (fried bites made of flaky pastry, stuffed with a mixture of sweet mizithra, eggs and sugar), mizithropita or melitinia (small pies stuffed with sweet mizithra, eggs and sugar scented with mastic), amigdalota (trimmed almond, eggs and sugar scented with rose water) and dried figs (dried figs with sesame). You can find all these in confectionaries of the island.

Honey
Ios has a very developed apiculture and produces amazing honey usually from thyme bushes which abound in this area. Especially “Magiotiko” variety produced by the flowers of May is famous for its amazing scent, taste and color. You can buy it from local bee-keepers and supermarkets.

Drinks
In Ios you can find biological wine produced by local producers. It is of excellent quality. You can also try the traditional island tsikoudia, a drink made through distillation and which is stronger than the Cretan one. You can buy these drinks from local producers of the island.

Caper-Oregano
Caper and oregano come from bushes that abound in Ios. We highly recommend them to the lovers of quality tastes. You can buy them from local producers or gather them yourself from the fields of the island.
