Yannis Tsarouchis at Benaki Museum

Enter the ‘world’ of Yannis Tsarouchis through the exhibition Yannis Tsarouchis: Studies for 17 Themes hosted at Benaki Museum (Peiraios street Annexe) until March 31, 2013.

The exhibition approaches for the first time studies, variations, unpublished photographs and original archive material that belongs to the Yannis Tsarouchis Foundation, through a totally different standpoint.

Throughout the 60 years that Tsarouchis kept painting incessantly, he created a multi-faceted, exceptionally rich and composite artistic ensemble that embodies all the essence of the encounter of Greek art and 20th century contemporary painting.

A less known aspect of his work, beyond his famous and renowned paintings, is the method he followed in order to elaborate on a theme or a theme series. This particular exhibition focuses on this exact aspect of his work and attempts to introduce the visitor to the artist’s studio.

Through drawings, in some cases rudimentary and in others in the form of mature exercises, but also, through completed paintings, the creative process followed by the painter is demonstrated in order to convey the important themes that preoccupied him from his early youth till his mature years, like the Sacrifice of Iphigenia, the Departure, the Letter, the Four Seasons and others.

Through studies, trials, variations of the same theme but also objects that he would use, i.e. wings for the series Youth with Butterfly Wings (that he had constructed himself), photographs of the models he selected and their posture (material presented for the first time to the public), his method of preparing and executing his paintings is revealed to the spectator.

Therefore, the exhibition decodes the multilateral work of one of the most important representatives of the generation of the 30s, through a unique standpoint, that of his studio.
The exhibition was curated by the President of the Yannis Tsarouchis Foundation, Niki Gripari, and designed by Lili Pezanou.
