Vassilis Vrettos 23 07 2018 Exhibition

Vassilis Vrettos' photographic pilgrimage "23.07.18", is a thorough recording of the burnt out place of his childhood and adult life.

Shortly after the devastating fire of July 23, 2018 in Mati and NeosVoutzas areas in Attica, VassilisVrettos visited and photographed the homes of both friends and acquaintances, most of whom suffered not only extensive material losses but also human casualties.

The photographic testimony of the ruined walls and burnt houses, of dead trees, damaged cars and melted everyday items tells stories within stories with clear and compelling clarity, hovering in both our eyes and memory for a long time to come.

A second recording unity by Vrettos consists of portraits; people who choose to be photographed in the remnants of their home while holding and rescuing favorite household objects in front of the lens.

The presentation of the exhibition at the Benaki Museum, approximately one year after the great disaster, comes as a tribute and at the same time a symbolic and moving commemoration.
