Traditional Carnival Costume Exhibition

The Greek tradition of Carnival from the islands and the mainland of Greece stars in the “Traditional Carnival Exhibition” at "Aggeliki Hatzimichali" Museum of Folk Art and Tradition from 27 January to 19th February. It is presented by the Culture, Sport and Youth Organization of the Municipality of Athens in collaboration with the “Lyceum Club of Greek Women”

The costumes meet the vivid imagination of the man who wants to revive the past, as much as possible. Some of the costumes give us the opportunity to get to know what “Correla” (male and female dressed in Skyrian women's clothing) is, from Skyros’ carnival team, “Boula and Giannitsaros” from Naousa Imathias, the “Cordelatoi” from Naxos while admiring the construction details and color combinations in the masks of the Sochou Carnival of Macedonia.

These costumes represent a special part of our folk tradition which is accompanied by customs from the past. These customs during the carnival celebrations continue throughout Greece as pre-vernal equinox rituals with imitation of plowing, sowing, etc. and many other magic elements such as disguise and bells, whose origin and purpose are lost in the depths of centuries of human existence on earth.

Admission to the public is free.

For more information about the exhibition, please visit the official site of the “Aggeliki Hatzimichali” Museum of Folk Art & Tradition of the Municipality of Athens.
