Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra in Athens

Moscow’s world famous Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra is coming to Greece for the first time ever and will be performing famous works by Tchaikovsky in a single captivating performance that will be staged in late June at Athens’s iconic venue of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.

The Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra (TSO) performance that will take place on Wednesday 27 June 2018 in Athens will be conducted by Vladimir Fedoseyev a living legend of Russian classical music and TSO’s heart and soul, who has served as its artistic director and chief conductor since 1974. The performance will also feature award-winning Russian pianist Varvara Nepomnyashchaya.

The first part of the performance will include some of Tchaikovsky's most well-known masterpieces, namely “Capriccio Italien” – a fantasy for orchestra – and “Piano Concerto No. 1” – a concert for piano and orchestra. In the second part the orchestra will perform suites and excerpts from Tchaikovsky's world-renowned ballets The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty and The Swan Lake.

The performance will be staged at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus – an impressive 2nd century BC open air theatre located beneath the Acropolis of Athens – and it is part of the Athens & Epidaurus Festival that takes place in June-August each summer featuring a top line-up of Greek and international theatre, drama, opera, music and dance performances in various iconic Athens and Epidaurus venues.

More info about the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra:
The Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra (TSO) was established in 1930 as the Moscow Grand Symphony Orchestra of All-Union Radio and Central Television. It was the first symphony orchestra active in the USSR as well as the first orchestra to perform non-Soviet composers. The TSO quickly rose to fame and became one of the leading orchestras in the world, as several major composers, including Nikolai Golovanov, Dmitri Shostakovich, Sergei Prokofiev, Aram Khachaturian and Georgy Sviridov, entrusted their works at the TSO.
