Reference to Guernica

Kyriakos Katzourakis’ exhibition titled “Reference to Guernica” is presented at the at the Irene Katsigras hall of the Municipal Art Gallery of Larissa.

It is the first time that Kyriakos Katzourakis presents this series of his works in Larissa. A bilingual catalogue has also been published on the occasion of the exhibition. Alongside the painting exhibition, Kyriakos Katzourakis also created the film titled USSAK, which centers on similar themes. The screening of the film will take place at the Municipal Art Gallery of Larissa - G. I. Katsigras Museum’s amphitheater on Thursday, February 21 2019. The film’s storyboard, created by Kyriakos Katzourakis, will be on display at the amphitheater’s foyer.

In recent years, amidst the prevalence of the financial crisis, Kyriakos Katzourakis has painted a series of works-commentaries on the Guernica. This mythical work of 1937, which dramatically seals another period of crisis – or rather horror – and which has since been haunting European awareness as the ultimate emblematic painting, seems to be torturing the artist’s memory and imagination, wishing to exist in a different way.”

“Katzourakis’ Guernica extends across more than forty small and large compositions, stirring up the main symbols of Picassian mythology and bringing out a series of new ones.”

In the exhibition’s catalogue, Mr. Maniatis writes: “To paraphrase Baudelaire, Katzourakis can be considered a modern-day artist, not only because of his art, but also because of his film work. His reality is not the result of sensory, but of lived experience.”

“It is not the typical daily life of the bustling city, colorful and loud, winded and fleeting. Katzourakis’ daily life is dark, enclosed, tragically substantial; it is neither superfluous nor verbose. His work is dominated by shades of grey and earth-brown within crevices of light. It is the daily life amidst the crisis, not as a news report but as a sensation, a daily experience. Katzourakis doesn’t illustrate; he interprets.”

Curator of the exhibition is art historian Mr. Manos Stefanidis.
