Navarino Challenge 2018 at Messinia, Peloponnese

Navarino Challenge, the multiple award-winning sports event (running, swimming, SUP) returns to Messinia in southwestern Peloponnese this autumn, where it will be held for the 6th consecutive time in mid-October welcoming professional athletes and sport lovers from Greece and abroad.

Navarino Challenge enters its sixth year featuring once again a vast array of sports activities. Held on 12-14 October 2018 and open to all ages, the three-day multi sports event will once again attract Olympic Medalists, champions and well known athletes along with amateur sports fans of all ages. The event is set in the stunning outskirts of Kalamata and the shores of Navarino Bay in Messinia, Peloponnese. Located in mainland Greece, the region of Messinia is one of the most unspoiled and breathtaking seaside landscapes in the Mediterranean that have been shaped by 4.500 years of history.

Participants at this year’s annual event are invited to compete and share unique moments across over 20 sports and fitness activities, including 12 Olympic sports. The event consists of 3 main sport events, namely running (21.1 km half marathon, 10K race and 5K race), swimming and Stand Up Paddling (SUP) but also several other activities and sports such as pilates, beach yoga, basketball, biking, climbing, taekwondo, kick boxing, tennis, golf and many more. Moreover, Navarino Challenge also boasts activities for the entire family among which baby swimming, aqua aerobic, kids’ athletics (with 400 metres hurdles distinguished athlete Periklis Iakovakis) and a 1km kids running race. For 2018, latest additions to the sports menu are the beach volley sessions and the King & Queen Beach Volley Tournament featuring internationally acclaimed Greek volleyball player, Michalis Triantafyllidis.

With Greek-American ultra-marathon runner Dean Karnazes acting as its ambassador and joined by many known Greek sportspeople and prominent athletes, this non-competitive annual event aims to raise awareness about the benefits of healthy living, exercise and the Mediterranean diet highlighting the issue of childhood obesity. This year’s Navarino Challenge will be attended by two-times taekwondo silver Olympic medalist, Alexandros Nikolaidis, four-time Boccia Paralympic medalist, Grigoris Polychronidis and one of the biggest names in the history of basketball as well as a former Real Madrid and Sacramento Kings basketball player, Joe Arlauckas.

Navarino Challenge, which is under the auspices of the Greek National Tourism Organisation( GNTO), is co-organized by Costa Navarino, The Westin Resort Costa Navarino and Active Media Group and supported by the Municipalities of Pylos-Nestor and Trifilia.
