For more than four decades Dimitris Alithinos (b. 1945) explores the boundaries of painting proposing an ecumenical perception of art.
For his first retrospective EMST presents more than 100 works covering all periods and spanning from the early 70’s until today. Paintings, drawings, installations, sculptural objects, films and videos, are presented for the first time alongside an extensive archival material, investigating the realisation of the artist’s demand for a new visual language. Successively, during the exhibition, volunteers re-enact three of Alithinos’ historical performances (A Happening, Untitled and 16 books – 16 Opinions).
An extensive archive related to the 176 Concealments (the renown series of Alithinos’ work hidden all over the planet) consisted of photos, videos and texts, is exhibited for the first time. Along with it, a new, large scale installation, made with more than 2,000 wall clocks, helps visualising the essential concept of the invisible Concealments series.
