Athens Marathon, The Authentic 2018

The Athens Classic Marathon, Greece’s major sports event that follows the original course from the Marathon to Athens’s Panathenaic Stadium, where the first modern Olympics were held, is gearing up to once again welcome a record breaking number of runners from all over the world this November.

The annual marathon road race, titled “Athens Marathon, The Authentic”, will take place for the 36th consecutive time on November 11th, 2018 and has its origins traced back to antiquity when in 490 AD the ancient Greek messenger Pheidippides ran from Marathon to Athens to announce the Greeks’ victory over the Persians at the legendary Battle of Marathon. This year’s race also marks 122 years from when the first contemporary Marathon race was held at the 1896 Athens Olympics.

The historic and prestigious 42km Athens Marathon Race will be held in parallel to a 42km Marathon Power Walking Race (both on the original Marathon course) as well as a 10km Road Race, two 5km Road Races (morning and evening one), a 3km Road Race, a 1.2km Special Olympics Road Race and a 1.2km Kids Race. Moreover, according to the organizers between all races some 50.000 runners, including some of the top long distance runners in the world, are expected to fill the streets of Athens looking to participate at this great celebration of sports and culture.

All races will take place on Sunday, November 11th, whereas the Opening Ceremony & the Marathon Flame Lighting Ceremony will take place on Saturday, November 10th at noon at the Marathon Tomb. In addition to the competitive part of the event, Athens will also host a grand AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races) Awards Reception on Friday, November 9th at Megaron Athens Concert Hall in honor of the best marathon runners in the world.
