Athens Carnival 2018

With more than 70 free of charge events, for 16 days, the municipality of Athens celebrates Carnival in its center and its neighborhoods from January 27th to February 19th.

The beat and joy of the festival transform the squares and streets of Athens into theaters. Dancers and spectators will be a barrel of laughs, participating in a Carnival packed full of traditional customs from all over Greece with a capsized character.

This year's celebration, organized by Athens Culture, Sports and Youth Organization, revives customs of the Carnival from various parts of Greece, accompanied by musical and contemporary programs for children. Plaka, Syntagma Square, Monastiraki, Thissio, Kypseli, Koukaki, Patisia, Pagkrati, Petralona, all over the city will be filled with carnival musical trails, concerts and carnivalists.

The weekend of January 27th & 28th, features the town crier who goes out, visits every neighborhood of the city and announces the opening of Triodion. Everyone is invited to be masqueraded and sprawl on the streets as it has been the normal tradition of the Carnival.

Syntagma Square is dominated by the traditional carnival rhythms and the revival of local customs from 8th February, Tsiknopempti, to 10th February.
On Sunday, 11th February what is now a customary appointment, Zappeion will turn into a big scene to host different events with our little friends. Music, dancing and many surprises will drift the little carnivalists into a big spree.

Moreover, fun for the kids carries on throughout the Carnival, as Museums, Libraries, Cultural Centers and Creative Learning Centers of the Municipality of Athens welcome our young friends to participate in events, performances and workshops.

The celebrations of the Carnival will be completed on Monday, 19th February at Philopappou Hill, where people of all ages will traditionally celebrate the “koulouma”-an outdoor celebration- with the Hellenic Music Workshop of the Municipality of Athens and Vangelis Konitopoulos.

A celebration for the “Koulouma” will also take place at the Children's and Culture Park (KAPAPS), with traditional music and dances from Cultural Association of Ano Ampelokipi.
