Antiparos International Photo Festival

For seven consecutive years, the Antiparos International Photo Festival has taken place on the small island of Antiparos in the Cyclades. This year’s festival will be held from the 6th to the 14th of July.

Antiparos has long been famed for an artistic community that dates back to the nineteen-seventies. The Antiparos International Photo Festival continues this tradition by providing a podium for up-and-coming talents while supporting the island. With steady steps, the Festival has evolved into a respected international event. What sets the Festival apart is firstly its size. The British Journal of Photography once called it the ‘smallest serious international photography festival in the world’ and, indeed, the Festival accepts no more than 15 photographers a year.

Secondly, photographs are exhibited outdoors in Antiparos’ beautiful 15th century ‘Kastro’ (Castle) which creates a unique, magical experience, enhanced by subtle lighting and live music. The Sea is an appropriate visual theme for an island, but it also a theme that has great resonance today with increasing awareness of global warming, pollution, and also the rapid disappearance of a way of life that owed itself to the ocean. With this in mind, the Antiparos International Photo Festival has partnered with Kapetaneika. Kapetaneika is an annual regatta for traditional Greek sailing boats (kaiki) which is held at Naoussa on the neighbouring island of Paros. Beyond being a nostalgic yet light-hearted race, it draws attention to a way of life that is rapidly disappearing: that of the courageous Greek fishermen who braved all weathers in their tiny wooden boats. Boats that – due to the depletion of fish stocks and increasing competition from industrial fisheries - are now being cut up, or sold to tourists. This is the background to the Antiparos Festival’s partnership with Kapetaneika.

The Antiparos International Photo Festival reflects the atmosphere of Antiparos in many ways. First and foremost is the warmth with which visitors are welcomed on the island, which is also mirrored in the way that the Festival welcomes its photographers and visitors. The island, and the festival, are growing in reputation, yet both are essentially open, honest and authentic.

Entrance is free.
