Ancient Chinese Science and Technology at Museum Herakleidon

Some of the most remarkable technological achievements of the Chinese civilisation – one of the oldest in the world – will be showcased for the first time ever in Greece as part of the exhibition “Ancient Chinese Science and Technology”.

The exhibition, which is part of the “Year 2017 of Cultural Exchange and Cooperation between Greece and China”, is hosted at both buildings of Museum Herakleidon in Thesion, Athens and runs until Sunday 29 April 2018. It includes 90 exhibits from the China Science and Technology Museum (CMST) in Beijing and focuses around four main themes, namely Astronomy and Time Measurement, Navigation and Orientation, Weaving and Embroidery and Papermaking and Printing.

From astronomy and navigation to weaving techniques, papermaking and printing, the Chinese civilisation has many important scientific and engineering accomplishments to showcase. Among others the paper; invented during the Ηan dynasty, the silk; first made in China some 6.000 to 7.000 thousand years ago, and the compass; one of the greatest inventions of ancient Chinese widely used in navigation.

The exhibition will also include true replicas of various other important Chinese inventions, such as the first seismograph (132 A.D.), ancient farming tools (i.e. the Chinese plow that first appeared 5.000 years ago) and the first wheelbarrow constructed more than a century before the respective European one.

Exhibits are supported by video-installations and all accompanying texts are available in three languages namely Greek, English and Chinese. Moreover, visitors will have the unique opportunity to watch and participate at several live demonstrations including but not limited to ancient Chinese weaving techniques as well as papermaking and printing techniques.

Under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Research and Religion, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Greek-Chinese Chamber.
