23rd Kalamata International Dance Festival

Kalamata, the city of dance, is set to host its 23rd annual festival from July 14 to 23, 2017.

Loved by audiences and always in line with the ground-breaking trends in contemporary dance worldwide, the Festival’s programme includes major renowned and emerging foreign artists and promotes contemporary Greek creativity through a memorable selection of performances. For ten days, the town of Kalamata will become a centre for modern dancing, eager to welcome artists and visitors from all over Greece and the world!

This year, the festival pays tribute to the great lady of the Greek Dance, Zouzou Nikoloudi, including 8 foreign teams from France, South Africa, Israel, Holland, Spain and Sweden and 4 Greek.

The Festival aims throughout the whole programme to showcase the need for social change and mentality either via social conflicts or peaceful alternatives. There will be many performances, as well as educational activities and parallel events at different venues of the city, such as the Zoumbouleio Megaro, the city’s historic Castle Amphitheatre, the Dance Megaron, the Municipal Regional Theatre of Kalamata etc.

Some of the performances will be “Romeo & Juliet / REBELLION & JOHANNESBURG” by the Moving Into Dance Mophatong, "Yama" by The Vertigo Dance Company, "Three Times Rebel" by Marina Mascarell, “Apogee” by Creo Dance company, and “Unsespected Time” by Kinitiras dance network.

Moreover, some exceptional contemporary dancers from the Choreographic Centre of Lorraine, the CCN2- National Choreographic center of Grenoble, as well as Adi Boutrous, Andrea Costanzo Martini, Iris Karayan, Yannis Mantafounis, and Aoife McAtamney will perform exploring the limits of the body the movement and the senses.

Different seminars, workshops and many activities open to everyone will complement the programme of the 23st Kalamata International Dance Festival, establishing a unique platform for engaging artists and the public and making Kalamata a true hub for contemporary dance.
