
It is one of the most important historic prefectures of North Greece as in its geographic area (apart from other numerous archaeological locations) ancient Aeges, the first capital city of ancient Macedonians was discovered. The prefecture shares boarders on the N with Pella, on the E with Thessaloniki, on the S with Pieria and W-SW with Kozani and on the E is washed by the waters of Thermaicos Gulf.
