Just 20 km from Heraklion, in the historical mountainous village of Krousonas, the Museum of Greek folk music, musical instruments, research and documentation is located with the characteristic name of “THIRATHEN” (Thirathen Pedia means classical education in Byzantine Era which had secular nature).
In a renovated traditional village house, where the sounds of Nature are wed with the traditional musical instruments and continuously compose unique melodies, reserving a visitor’s trip to the charm of Music.
One of the major purposes of the Museum is the introduction to the local society of the (Cretan) Greek traditional Music in its whole as well as its familiarization with Greek and foreign traditional instruments.
The Museum’s ambitions are to emerge as the cradle of culture through a variety of festivities and activities based on traditional music. An additional goal is the creation of a Research and Documentation Centre of our musical tradition.
The Museum is open to the region’s educational institutions for visits. These visits are accompanied by a variety of activities such as music-kinetic games, audio guiding around the Museum, projecting videos and slides, that serve educational purposes. Relevant seminars may also be organized to help specialists exchange views and ideas.
