Significant parts of the Byzantine castle are still preserved in today’s Ginekokastro. The Byzantine castle was built during 13th century by emperor Andronikos Paleologos. The area was named Ginekokastro because it was so well fortified that even women could defend it. Remarkable are also the four-day events in Ginekokastro during the first 10 days of August.
