The Prefecture of Chania provides an array of activities and sports. If you are interested in taking lessons in water sports, such as sailing, water skiing or diving, you can inquire at the Yacht Club of the city of Chania. At the Tennis Club you will have the chance to play tennis and volleyball and at the large hotel units you will find golf courses. At the water park a little way out of the city you will greatly enjoy the water adventures in the pool. At organized beaches you can find paragliding facilities.
Ammolofos Neas Choras lies 2 km from the center of the city of Chania and lends itself to paragliding. Flights take place in any wind direction. One of the most beautiful flights in Crete is only 45 km from the city of Chania. Take off is made at the end of the road for the Kallergi Shelter.
The direction of the flight from the Kallergi Shelter is NW and continues over the Samaria Gorge and Gigilo. It is really worth it if there is an easterly wind or if there is no wind at all. A small rural road (4 km from the village of Askifou leads to the take off site which lies at the top of the mountain. The plateau, even when there is no wind, produces strong thermal air currents so as to allow for someone to stay in the air for many hours. Information is available at the Air Club of Chania.
At the Akrotiri a tennis court and mini golf course is offered for lovers of the sport. Alternatively, you can test your endurance and admire natural landscapes by doing some mountain climbing. At Lefka Ori (White Mountains) shelters are in operation at the site of Volikas, with a capacity of 25 people and at the site of Kallergi, the capacity of 40 people. For more information contact EOS (Greek Mountaineering Association) of Chania at 08210/44647. At Falasarna you will also find water sports equipment.
